2014 inter-Union Gas Conference Day 2

2014 inter-Union Gas Conference

Held September 8-11 at the Disney Yacht Club in Orlando, Florida

Tuesday September 9, 2014

Disney World fact of the day: When Disney World opened admission to the Magic Kingdom was a mere $3.50 compared to $99 today.

The morning saw the delegates choose between the Clerical, Distribution, Service and Transmission, Storage & Field Operations Workshops. I went to the Transmission, Storage & Field Operations Workshop facilitated by Charlie Rittenhouse, UWUA, Wilber Engelhardt of the USW and Bob Price of Unifor out of Ontario. Charlie played a video of various Fire Resistant Clothing exposed to a 4 second flash fire which showed the varying degrees of burn. Most concerning for someone from rainy Vancouver was the video of FR rain gear.

Most of the discussion for the session was on Liquid Natural Gas Plants and how companies are racing to try and get export facilities up and running. It sounds like a build first, train later (maybe) type of atmosphere across the continent.

Famous Orlandonite quote of the day: "As usual, if you or any of your team are caught or killed we will disavow any knowledge of you and laugh atcha ass."

Wayne Brady - Whose Line Is It Anyway

The afternoon session began with a detailed report by Lynda Farrell on the many tragic incidents within the gas industry. On this, the anniversary of the San Bruno explosion, it was a grim reminder of just how dangerous natural gas can be. Twenty one dead, one hundred and forty five injured and hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage between 2010 & 2012 alone. Ed Pawlowski, the mayor of Allentown, Pennsylvania was a late cancellation.

The afternoon concluded with Bill Copic of the Hanson McClain Retirement Nettwork giving a presentation on Investing Your Future. Although this was primarily geared towards the Americans in the audience, his recommendation of the website www.brokercheck.com may be of use to some members of IBEW213.

Song of the day: Oh, The Boss is Coming

Artist: Arkells

Album: Jackson Square (2008)
