Community programs are at risk for next year.

United Way invests in young children, particularly those in jeopardy,
and helps older children make the right choices.

Last month, in just a 16-day period, 12 people died in targeted shootings,
as gang warfare erupted throughout the region.

Research shows that we can break the cycle of violence by helping
vulnerable children at a time in their life when the right support can make
all the difference in the world.

United Way is encouraging people to give as little as $10 to
help give kids a way out.

Please share this message with co-workers, friends and family.

Thank you.
Many small contributions can make a big impact in changing lives.

Minimum Wage $10 BannerB.C.'s lowest paid workers deserve a raise. Minimum wage earners working full-time should earn enough to stay above the poverty line. That can only be achieved by immediately raising the minimum wage to at least $10.00 per hour.  Your help is urgently needed in the campaign to increaes the minimum wage.

BILL  C-257 (FEDERAL ANTI-SCAB BILL)
DEFEATED IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS

Bill C-257 - a federal bill to ban  the use of scabs in labour disputes that fall under federal jurisdiction - was DEFEATED today in the House of Commons by a vote of 177 - 122.

This is a highly unusual outcome as the House of Commons had previously approved the Bill "in principle" on second reading.

However, following the second reading vote, the business lobby really went to town and threw up numerous objections and lobbied heavily against the bill.

Stephane Dion publicly opposed the Bill.

Once again the saying that "Government is the shadow that business casts over the community"
proved to be very true.

In BC all ten NDP MPS voted in favour of the Bill.

All 18 BC Conservative MPS voted against the Bill including John Cummins who supported the Bill at second reading (in principle).

BC Liberals Keith Martin and Blair Wilson voted against the Bill.

Liberals Sukh Dhaliwal, Don Bell, Raymond Chan, Hedy Fry and Stephen Owen voted in favour of the Bill while Ujjal Dosanjh was absent from the House due to illness.
