Collective bargaining with Chubb Security Systems produced a package that the negotiating committee were prepared to recommend to the membership. The package contained general increases of 4% each year of a three year agreement plus a number of revisions to the collective agreement. There were no concessions. Also in the package is a voluntary recognition agreement covering the technicians and clerical staff of Chubb in Prince George and Terrace which will see our new members immediately achieve all the terms and conditions of the existing collective agreement and progression to eventual wage parity in October 2010. The agreement recognizes all of Chubb’s technical and clerical staff province wide.
A province-wide vote was conducted and the agreement was approved by 85% of the members. In the midst of the voting process the Labour Relations Board (LRB) issued its long awaited decision on the certification application for Prince George and Terrace. The LRB agreed with this Local Union that the new members should be covered by the same certification as the existing membership (a position the employer opposed), but did not agree the terms and conditions of the collective agreement would automatically apply, however, we had taken care of that issue through the voluntary recognition. The LRB also ordered that the original certification ballots be counted (they had been held by the LRB. unopened since December 2007). That was done and the ballot count shows 80% in favour of representation by Local 213.
Henry wishes to thank the committee who assisted him at these difficult negotiations, namely Rock Bates and Barry Boucher and also (ABM) Mike Flynn and the unnamed group (you know who you are) from Prince George - their help was invaluable.
